Murakami is one of my favorite authors. I've read all of the fiction that he's published in English. I think I prefer his earlier works to his more recent stuff like Kafka on the Shore. I don't know whether that is because the novelty of his authorial voice is wearing off or whether they are qualitatively worse. Regardless, when I picked up Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman (BWSW) I really struggled with it. It just didn't me at all. After making it about half way through I put it down -- for nearly two years. nike uk |

I don't like the other stories in this collection but "A Song For Lya" is fantastic. I actually think it's George R.R. Martin's best work, and it's 1/10 the length of any of the "Song of Ice and Fire" books. Dangerous Visions pushed the envelope as far as subject matter and literary quality, but that was 1967. What surprised me in 2014 is how uniformly excellent these stories were and how fresh so many of them still seemed. A handful struck me as just okay, but the batting average is very high. I don't know what was different. Maybe all the best stories are in the second half? Maybe I'm a different person than I was two years ago? More ready to absorb the wonder of Murakami's world? I don't know. Whatever the difference was, I loved the second half. It contains a couple of stories that are pretty meh: the ice man, for instance.
